A Timberland Commercial. Colour grading for clients on the other side of the world...

Updated: Jan 3, 2022

Recently I was lucky enough to be approached by Bluehour Labs (https://www.bluehourlabs.com) in NYC to grade some of their projects they'd recently shot. Specifically, two campaigns for Timberland (not the musician). The two campaigns were targeting both their male and female markets and were shot using the Red Scarlet + the good old BMPCC6K. During our first zoom call, I knew this was going to be a fun project, as Alex and Kris from Bluehour are creative geniuses and even better, lovely guys. They were super trusting and collaborative from the offset and gave me a lot of creative freedom during the grade. That said, I did have some excellent reference to work off from (see below):

Using The Film Feel power grade as a base, I was able to soften up the footage and start to push and pull a lot of colours from the references into the footage. Here are some initial frames I sent Kris and Alex to make sure I was on the right path:

As with anything, hindsight is a wonderful thing and looking at the commercials now (and even these stills), there are a few things I would change now. That said, I think we landed in a pretty good place for both the ads and after a few rounds of revisions we got sign off and the projects were set free into the wild.
