Film emulation in photography..
Updated: Jan 3, 2022
As a colourist and ex-filmmaker, I'd always tried to emulate the look of film for clients, as well as for my own films. One thing that never occurred to me (until recently) is to see if I could achieve the same results within Davinci Resolve for my photos. I've always loved photography and it's how I cut my teeth in the industry and learnt my way around cameras and editing. That said, over time I began to tire more and more with the medium, as I never found it as "emotive" as film (cringe I know). But I also really struggled to love digital photography, as much as I loved analogue/ film photography, as it was always just to clinical. However, as anyone into shooting film would know, it can become a really expensive hobby, especially if you are a trigger happy shooter like me. The costs of film, dev & scanning can really add up over a holiday, or extending shooting period. Thus, the reason why I decided to apply a similar approach to how I grade LOG footage, but on my photos. To save some of my precious pennies! I'm still in the early experimentation phase, but here are some of my early results.
